Color and state display

YTCC screens are designed to stay calm in normal operation. Color is kept for abnormal states and alarms and for telling live values apart from fixed text, so that anything colored draws the operator's eye. A state should never be shown by color alone: add a shape, a text or a symbol as well.

The settings on this page are in the page properties, in the PROJECT group, which the screen editor shows while no object is selected. They apply to the whole project.

Values that are not available

A bound object can show three situations instead of a normal value:

  • Waiting: the screen has opened but the value has not arrived yet. Text shows … and colors are a neutral grey.
  • Timed out: no value arrived within the Wait timeout, 10 seconds by default (1 to 120 seconds). The object shows what its binding defines for an unavailable value, and text shows ?.
  • Invalid: the value arrived with a bad quality. The object shows its unavailable appearance at once.

Waiting style sets how waiting objects look: Dimmed + … (the default), Design appearance or Mark only. Invalid color sets the color used for invalid values, and Show unknown mark (?) turns the ? on or off.

Lost communication

When the browser has no connection to the server, or the driver or device is not connected, bound objects turn to the communication-lost color, pink (#ec4899) by default. A bad value or a manual value does not use this color, so the three situations stay different on screen. Bindings to a signal's status or quality keep working, because they are the way to show the communication state itself.

SettingOptions
Communication lost colorThe color, pink by default. A symbol, an object or a symbol instance can use its own color.
Communication lost displayDynamic colors (the default): the bound colors turn pink. Border marks the object with a frame in that color instead, and Color + frame does both.
Value while communication is lostLast known value (the default) or Unknown (?)

The communication-lost display cannot be turned off.

Project colors

Project colors are colors named by their meaning, such as running, stopped or alarm, each with a value for the light and the dark theme. Objects use the name, so changing a project color changes every object that uses it. Add and edit them under Project colors in the PROJECT group.

Accessibility

  • Color-only state: the editor checks for states shown by color alone and reports them as a Warning (the default) or an Error.
  • Contrast: the editor warns when a text color has a contrast below 4.5:1 against its background. For graphics the threshold is 3:1.
  • Blinking: the project sets the blink rate of screen objects, from 0.5 to 4 Hz (1 Hz by default). On the runtime screen, each user can choose Turn blinking off in the session menu. This stops blinking objects on screens; the priority icons in the alarm list and alarm bar keep blinking.
  • Reduced motion: when the operating system asks for reduced motion, alarm priority icons still blink at the same rate but with lower contrast.
